A Customs department head constable was arrested for allegedly taking Rs 3,000 bribe from a contractor in Kandla Special Economic Zone (KASEZ) near Kandla port in Kutch district on Wednesday.
The accused identified as 55-year-old Ishad Sama was arrested by Gujarat’s Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) hours after he was caught red-handed while allegedly accepting the bribe at Old Gate of KASEZ. Sama had been demanding bribe from the complainant for the past two months, said officials.
Gandhidham ACB police station in-charge inspector TH Patel told The Indian Express: “A labour contractor supplying manpower to a firm inside KASEZ in his complaint stated that Sama had been demanding Rs 3,000 bribe from him to allow movement of his labourers.”
“Sama used to make phone calls to the complainant stating that the latter had not paid him his monthly instalment of Rs1500 for the past two months and therefore Rs3000 were due.” the inspector said.
“The contractor, however, had all valid permits, so, he submitted a complaint on Monday, based on which, we laid the trap on Wednesday and arrested Sama after he accepted the bribe,” said Patel.
Located on the outskirts of Gandhidham town, KASEZ is the country’s first special economic zone (SEZ).
