Curtain rises on two-day translators’ festival at IIT-GN

The first-ever festival of translators at IIT-Gandhinagar, called Tarjuma,began Thursday,with a panel discussion titled Translating the classic slamming the attempt by right-wing parties to appropriate Ramayana.

Noted Bangalore-based Sanskrit translator Arshia Sattar said,The Ramayana belongs to us,irrespective of religion.

Answering a question by the audience,she said,My Ramayana came out in the 90s and sank. During those days,people who translated the Ramayana did not want to be associated with it because the Hindutva right-wing had appropriated the text.

The first day of the two-day festival,spread over four sessions,saw eminent translators of South Asian literature explore themes like War,women and the Politics of Body and Translating across forms.

The panel discussions also saw representation from various publishing houses that brought out the market perspective of translations.
