A Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) jawan was arrested for allegedly kidnapping an eight-year-old boy from his neighbourhood in Ankleshwar city of Bharuch district and then killing him, police said on Saturday.
The accused, Shailendra Rajput Prajapati (35), whose current posting is in Gwalior in Madhya Pradesh, had kept the body of the minor in a trunk at his house after killing him, said officials, adding that he also pretended to help the child’s parents in finding him to avoid suspicion.
He was on a leave from work, and was alone at his house at Dadhal village at the time of the incident as his wife and children had left for their native town in Uttar Pradesh.
The accused was under huge debt and was being chased by money lenders. He also allegedly wanted to recover from the losses that he had faced in the share market, as per police, and demanded a ransom of Rs 5 lakh from the parents of the child. On Thursday afternoon, he found Shubh Bhisam Rajbhar, the victim, playing outside his house.
He lured Shubh inside the house, tied his hands, and legs with rope and taped his mouth.
After Shubh went missing, his parents lodged a missing complaint with the Ankleshwar Rural Police on Thursday night. Shailendra Rajput also joined the search operation with his parents to avoid suspicion. The next day, however, the accused allegedly sent a WhatsApp message to the victim’s mother, demanding a ransom of Rs 5 lakh. He also threatened the parents not to tell the police in the message.
But Bhisam Rajbhar, the child’s father, informed police about the message. After tracing the number, police reached the accused’s house, where he was questioned and he confessed to the crime, said officials.
Giving details, inspector K G Sisodiya said, “Prima facie, the cause of the death of the child is due to suffocation. The boy died due to suffocation four hours after he was kidnapped as his mouth was taped. The accused kept the body in a trunk as he did not get a chance to dispose it.”
He further added, “The service period of the accused with CRPF is 17 years and his father had also worked in Gujarat State Reserve Police Force. The family decided to settle in Ankleshwar in the house bought by his father. His parents died a few years ago. According to his confessional statements, he is under heavy debt and lost a huge amount in online share trading activity. To overcome the loss and repay the borrowed money, he had planned to kidnap the minor, and had demanded ransom of Rs 5 lakh.”
