The Gandhinagar unit of CID Crime arrested a couple from Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday for allegedly cheating 5,000 people from Gujarat of Rs 50 crore by promising high returns on their investment. The agency, on Thursday, also arrested a man from Lucknow in Uttar Pradesh, accused of cheating around 300 people in Gujarat of over Rs 7 crore.
In the first case, the CID identified the accused as Manojkumar Lakshmichand Chaand and his wife Bandhana, both natives of Lucknow. They had been absconding since 2018 when they were booked in the case.
According to the CID, the couple, along with other accused in the case, set up three companies – Vishwamitra Social and Educational Trust, Vishwamitra Producer Company and Vishwamitra International Infra Limited.
“They promised high returns to those who invested in these companies. More than 5,000 people from Gujarat were cheated off their investments worth over Rs 50 crore. The accused are facing 19 FIRs in various states, including in Rajasthan, Haryana, Bihar and Uttar Pradesh,” an officer said.
In the second case, Sunilkumar Chandrapal Lal Shrivastav was booked by the Gandhinagar police in 2019 for allegedly setting up four companies – Real Indian CApital and Infrastructure Corporation Limited, Real India Suraksha Nidhi Limited Company, Real India Agro Producer Company and Real India Mutual Benefit Corporation Limited – with other accused.
They promised high returns to their investors but duped them of their money, the police said, adding that nearly 300 people from Gujarat were cheated of Rs 7.86 crore.
The police said that during interrogation, it was found that Shrivastav had similarly cheated several in other states. While he is facing one FIR each in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, the Gujarat Police has initiated proceedings to seize his assets. A special GPID court has remanded Shrivastav to police custody till June 12.
