Couple attempts suicide, man dies

The couple was found unconscious by villagers in a jungle on Friday.

A 22-year-old woman is battling for life at Vadodara’s SSG Hospital, two days after allegedly attempting suicide along with her lover and neighbour from Kuvediya village in Halol. The lovebirds, said to be separated due to family pressure allegedly consumed poison a day before the family arranged wedding of the girl. The man, Thakor Anupsinh Rathwa, 22, passed away on Saturday.

The police are investigating the alleged attempted suicide of a young couple from Halol, separated by their families. The incident occurred on Wednesday after a pre-nuptial ceremony of the girl, Kalpana Nayak, with another suitor. Kalpana’s family had arranged her wedding for May 16. According to the police, Kalpana was unhappy about the wedding and eloped with Thakor after the ceremony. The couple was found unconscious by villagers in a jungle on Friday. A police officer said, “The girl had made up her mind that she would not marry another man except her lover. We are investigating the matter to ascertain the facts of the case and whether it is an attempted suicide.”

On Saturday, Thakor died at the SSG Hospital, where Kalpana is still fighting for her life. Police said Kalpana’s parents have, in their statement, said her wedding was fixed with a suitor from Ravalia village in Pavagadh, two months ago, as per her wish. “Her parents maintain that she was happy with the marriage. Villagers have said that Thakor and Kalpana were together for several years and their families did not approve of the match. We will investigate the case thoroughly before arriving at a conclusion.”
