The court of the Vadodara district judge on Tuesday sent a police officer accused of bribery to judicial custody in Vadodara Central Jail.

Inspector S B Patel of the Western Railway Local Crime Branch,Government Railway Police, had allegedly demanded Rs 24,000 from Bharuch-based businessman Niyamat Ahmed Raj while threatening him to book for bootlegging.

Last Friday,Patel sent Assistant Sub-Inspector Hasan Mohammad of the Railway Local Crime Branch to Raj’s house in New Kasak locality in Bharuch to collect the money, where ACB officers arrested Hasan red-handed. ACB Inspector Kalpesh Solanki said Hasan told them that he had only come to collect the money on behalf of Patel.

“Patel told Raj to either pay Rs 2.5 lakh or else get booked under Prevention of Anti-Social Activity (PASA) Act for distributing liquor in the area,” said Solanki, adding that Patel had taken advantage of Raj’s past. Raj was earlier booked by Bharuch police for selling liquor.

On Sunday and Monday, the police conducted raids on Patel’s residence in Tapovan Society of Nizampura. “But on Monday afternoon,Patel himself showed up at ACB office in Vadodara,” said Solanki.

After completing the formalities,ACB officers formally handed over Patel to the Raopura police. On Tuesday, the district judge rejected Patel’s bail plea and sent him to judicial custody.
