The day after the results of the Junagadh Municipal Corporation (JMC) elections,the Congress has started the exercise to finalise the candidature for the post of Mayor. Congress leaders in the city said the party has won 26 seats out of 51 and would form the civic body on its own. Sources said the BJP which won 21 seats is in the process of contacting some elected Congress legislators. However,when asked,the BJP leaders denied the reports terming them baseless and maintained that the party would sit in the opposition. Karsan Dhadook,the president of the BJPs Junagadh city unit,said,Our party is in no way trying to form the new civic body in JMC. We respect the verdict and will sit in the opposition. He said: At present,we are trying to come out of the shocking results. We dont know what exactly went wrong. Our plan of action is to sit in the opposition,continue our work and support the ruling party in development of Junagadh city. Pravin Tank,Junagadh city Congress unit president and councillor elected from ward number 10,said,The term of the current civic body ends on July 30. JMC general board meeting is scheduled on the same day. The Congress will come to power and the candidate for the post of Mayor will be decided in the same meeting.When asked about probable candidates for the post of Mayor,Tank said state Congress leaders are expected to arrive there in a couple of days. Responding to the reports of horse-trading,he said,It cannot be ruled out. The BJP can go to any extent to remain in power.
