Cong slams govt over non-supply of surplus Narmada water

The Opposition Congress on Thursday came down heavily on the government for “not implementing” its scheme of providing one million acre feet of the surplus Narmada water to north Gujarat,Saurashtra and Kutch each.

The Opposition Congress on Thursday came down heavily on the government for “not implementing” its scheme of providing one million acre feet of the surplus Narmada water to north Gujarat,Saurashtra and Kutch each.

The issue figured in the House during a discussion on the short notice question asked by Congress MLA Mansinh Chauhan. Raising a supplementary, senior Congress member Arjun Modhwadia said though the government talks high about providing the Narmada water to different parts of the state,it has not fulfilled its promise to transport the surplus water to these three parched regions.

Replying to this,Water Resources Minister Nitin Patel informed the House that efforts were on to provide the water to north Gujarat, while a study report on supplying the surplus water to Saurashtra and Kutch was under consideration of the government. “We are in the process of considering all relevant aspects, including the transportation and storage of water,to be provided to these two regions,” he said.

The minister conceded that village ponds in several parts of the state could not be filled up this year due to inadequate rainfall. He told the House that seven ponds in Kapadwanj taluka and 24 in Kathlal had been filled up with Narmada water in September and October.

The government has already spent Rs 6,489.79 crore on the project, the state Water Resources Minister said while replying to a non-starred question tabled in the House by BJP MLA Mangalbhai Patel on Thursday.
