Gujarat saw an escalation in the political controversy linked to Dr BR Ambedkar on Tuesday as Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel alleged that Congress never attempted to make a memorial for Ambedkar, and instead, only made memorials and named hospitals and roads after people of the Nehru-Gandhi family. In response, Manish Doshi, chief spokesperson of Gujarat Congress,  launched an attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah amid row over Shah’s recent comments in Parliament.

In a video released by the Gujarat BJP, the Chief Minister is heard alleging that Congress “always insulted Ambedkar and that it should apologise unconditionally to the entire country” for that.  The Chief Minister is also heard saying that Congress did not give Bharat Ratna to Ambedkar. “Congress did not allow the construction of a single memorial of Babasaheb (Ambedkar).  The government of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has built a memorial of Babasaheb in London where he used to live; a memorial was a memorial was built in Delhi at his (Ambedkar’s) residence; memorials have been built at Diksha Bhoomi of Nagpur and Chaitya Bhoomi of Mumbai. Congress never took any step to build a memorial of Babasaheb. They only created hurdles,” the Chief Minister alleged.

He further added, “In contrast, hundreds of memorials were built in the entire country and hospitals and roads were named after (Jawaharlal) Nehru, Indira Gandhi, Sanjay Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi. The same Congress is doing press conferences in the name of Babasaheb Ambedkar. Congress should stop such hypocrisy,” he added in the video while also claiming that Congress forced Ambedkar to resign as the  law minister, and also “defeated” him in the elections of 1952 and 1954. Jawaharlal Nehru even campaigned for Narayan Sadoba Kajrolkar who defeated Ambedkar in the election, he said.

Referring to the ongoing controversy and protests related to the recent statement of Shah in Rajya Sabha on Dr Ambedkar, CM Patel said that Congress is making it a political issue while presenting a small portion of Shah’s speech without giving any context.

The CM also stated that BJP is respecting even those who are its opponents, but who have contributed to nation-building. “But for Congress, only one family is everything,” the Chief Minister alleged in the video.

Meanwhile, Gujarat Congress issued a sharp reaction over the Chief Minister’s remarks.

“A person like the Home Minister has spoken from the floor of Parliament in an insulting manner (about Ambedkar). And the BJP is roaring instead of getting ashamed (of it),” said Doshi.  “What is very sad is that sitting at the top position, the Prime Minister is promoting such activity instead of getting his colleague (Shah) to shut his mouth or asking him to apologise…BJP and RSS have been trying to damage the Constitution and Congress party and its leaders including Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi will continue the fight to save the Constitution,” Doshi added.

Doshi claimed that it was a success of Congress party and the entire country that BJP, leaders and ideologues of which had once said that the Constitution should be thrown into Arabian sea, is talking about Babasaheb Ambedkar now.
