A Team of 400 boys and 50 girls will help the police in traffic management at different junctions in Ahmedabad from June 10 onwards,following a decision to this effect by the Traffic Department. Attired in blue and white uniform,they will operate both full time and part time (in case of students),assisting the citys Traffic Police,said Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic) M M Anarwala. He said: People were selected from different streams and fields. The age group is between 18 and 35 years. A majority of them are students. They will be paid Rs 100 per day for the job. The public-private initiative will give them a picture of traffic management,what it is all about and how it is done. He added: The selected people will handle traffic along with the other traffic policemen. They will not be entitled to collect fines or catch people violating traffic rules. The senior policemen guiding them will fine the violators. They will also be deployed at all big and critical junctions in the city that need more traffic policemen on duty. Anarwala said these recruits underwent a couple of training sessions before their selection. Our expert trainers trained them in all aspects of road safety,road management,signage and techniques of handling different traffic equipment. Now,they will get their practical exposure this Wednesday. The move is part of the Traffic Departments long-term plan to augment its workforce as it facing an acute shortage of personnel. At present there are nine inspectors,13 sub-inspectors,759 constables and senior ranks of three Assistant Commissioners of Police,one Deputy Commissioner and one Joint Commissioner of Police in the department.
