25-year-old woman from a Chhota Udepur village was rescued after she was stranded on a hillock amid raging Kara river when she stepped out to relieve herself Friday.
The woman was rescued after a three-hour operation by the district fire department and locals in Moti Takori village of Kawant taluka.
Officials said following heavy rainfall in the past 48 hours, the check dams and rivers in the district began overflowing “at once” on Friday.
According to Dr AP Chaudhari, Mamlatdar of Kawant taluka, the fire and emergency team was summoned by the district authorities after receiving a call from locals about a woman being stranded on a hillock Friday morning. She had managed to escape after being caught in the raging river that “swelled all of a sudden” while she was answering nature’s call and climbed up the hillock for safety.
In videos of the rescue operations, a team from the fire department and locals are seen reaching out to the marooned hillock in the middle of Kara river, with the help of ropes and life jackets, fighting against the raging river currents. They can be later seen rescuing the woman.
“The operation lasted for over three hours as the currents are strong and it has been raining heavily. The fire team and the locals managed to rescue the woman from the hillock and across the river with the help of ropes and harness,” Chaudhari said.
