After trying the novel idea of using non-teaching staff as invigilators during board exams to check instances of last year, the Gujarat Secondary and Higher Secondary Education Board (GSHSEB) has dropped the idea this year as other government departments have opted out of this additional work.

With the board exams scheduled to start from March 4,the GSHSEB will depend on its own staff for invigilation.

Last year, the board had formed flying squads comprising Class I and II officers from various government departments to carry out surprise checks at different examination centres.

The officers were appointed by respective district collectors. The objective of the exercise was to contain copying and cheating during the exams.

The new measure, which was appreciated by the schools, had resulted in catching a large number of students for copying.

Now,as the GSHSEB was all set to make the exercise a permanent feature, the government departments have refused to take part in the month-long activity.

With this, the Board now intends to include Class I and II officials of the Education Department in the flying squads this year.

“The activity is too long for departments like Revenue to be involved. The departments have many other official tasks to perform. We will instead have Class I and II officials from the Education Department, preferably the higher secondary department,in the flying squads. I do not think this will make much of a difference,” said R I Patel,Secretary,GSHSEB.
