The state Civil Supplies Department has started a probe into allegations by Congress MLA Gayasuddin Sheikh that fair price shop (FPS) operators in Shahpur are selling kerosene in the blackmarket.
Deputy Food Controller (Civil Supply) R J Pandor said he received complaints from the legislator this morning and sent his staff to the spot for verification. I have called for details and asked my staff to probe into the allegations, said Pandor.
He added that if the allegations are found to be true, appropriate action will be taken against the FPS operators.
Sheikh told The Indian Express that he visited an FPS outlet near Rangila Chowky in Shahpur after complaints that the shopkeeper was indulging in short measurement and selling subsidised kerosene at Rs 15 per litre against the official price of Rs 12 per litre.
He said he caught the shopkeeper red-handed and called up the civil supply officials who found that the kerosene stock in the shop was less than what was shown in the register. This suggested that the shopkeeper had sold some of the commodity in the open market.
The MLA alleged that FPS owners have been indulging in black marketing and were fleecing the poor people who use kerosene as a fuel.
