The BJP has tighten its grip over the Gujarat Co-operative Milk Marketing Federation (GCMMF),the apex body of 13 milk unions of the state,by providing support to Parthi Bhatol.
Bhatol, who is also the chief of the Banaskantha Milk Producers’ Union,is considered to be a neutral man with his interest in the dairy business. During his tenure, the Federation achieved its biggest ever turnover of Rs 6,700 crore in 2008-09 with a growth of 28 per cent, while rest of the industries were feeling the heat of economic meltdown.
Before his uncontested election,Bhatol and Vipul Chaudhry, chief of Mehsana Milk Cooperative Union Ltd (MMCUL),were being seen as the two main contenders for the post.
According to sources,Chaudhry made a mistake by garnering support of Congress candidates Ramsinh Parmar and some other Congress-backed unions.
The BJP had two options either to support Chaudhry, former BJP MLA with controversial background,or Bhatol,a neutral no-nonsense man. They chose the latter, said a source in Anand, adding that Bhatols name was decided last night after meetings with heads of various milk cooperative unions.
Interestingly, both Bhatol and Chaudhry denied speaking on the development. Bhatol said,I am travelling and I dont have anything to say on this. Chaudhry,on the other hand, said: I have nothing to say. This is for the second time that Chaudhry failed to get the top post.
