BJP halts Parliament; Left,BJD join in

The BJP today disrupted Parliament yet again over the appointment of the Lokayukta in Gujarat, with some of the party’s political rivals, particularly the Left, extending symbolic support in the Rajya Sabha.

Trouble began as soon as the House started its proceedings this morning.

Significantly, leaders of non-NDA Opposition parties in the Rajya Sabha, including the Left’s Sitaram Yechury and D Raja,BJD’s Pyarimohan Mohapatra and AIAMDK’s V Maitreyan, stood up in a show of solidarity amid the ruckus.

Speaking to The Indian Express later,Raja said: “It is not a question of BJP or Modi. It is about safeguarding certain federal principles. Today,it happened it Gujarat. Tomorrow,it can happen in any other state. Today,it is a BJP government. Tomorrow,it can be any other party’s government. The question is how can the Governor act in such a manner.”

The BJD,which snapped its ties with the BJP in the run-up to the Orissa Assembly elections, spoke in a similar vein. Amid the melee,Mohapatra demanded rollback of the appointment and was heard saying that the “federal structure of the country has to be maintained”.

In the Lok Sabha, members belonging to the BJP,Samajwadi Party and Janata Dal (U) disrupted proceedings over different issues.

Consequently, the House was first adjourned till noon, some five minutes after it had met,and then, till 2 pm.
