The Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) on Saturday arrested a man from Bhuj in the Kutch district near the Indo-Pak border for allegedly leaking sensitive information to Pakistan agents, officials said. The man worked as a peon at the Central Public Works Department (CPWD) office on the BSF campus, they added.

The BSF has clarified in a statement that he was a contractual worker and is “not a BSF employee nor has any connections with BSF”.

The accused has been charged with the offences of waging war or attempts to wage war against the state, concealing with intent to facilitate design to wage war, and criminal conspiracy under IPC sections 121, 123, and 120B respectively. He was sent to 10 days of ATS custody on Saturday.

According to an official statement by the ATS, Nilesh Valjibhai Baliya, the accused, allegedly came in contact with an alleged female Pakistani agent identified as Aditi Tiwari on Whatsapp in January. He then allegedly “struck a friendship with her”, and told her he worked as a computer operator at the BSF office. The ATS further stated the Pakistani agent lured Baliya with the promise of monetary rewards if he shared confidential information on border security that she deemed useful. Baliya has been accused of agreeing to the arrangement.

According to the ATS, Baliya allegedly shared information on ongoing construction work and fresh construction on the BSF campus between January and June 26. After this, Baliya purportedly received UPI payments from various accounts amounting to Rs 28,000.

Baliya had been working at the electrical department of the CPWD office on the BSF Battalion-59 headquarters campus at Bhuj as a clerk for the past five years. “He is suspected to have shared information with his handlers in Pakistan and is being investigated,” the BSF stated.
