Baroda College of Pharmacy (BCP) has filed for four provisional patents for the inventions its faculty and students are currently working on. One of the important inventions for which the college has filed for patent is the release of a hypertension drug called Nifedipine. It is an immediate release drug and hence if taken at bed time, its effectiveness lasts for a few hours but does not last till early morning, when most of the heart stroke cases are usually reported. Speaking to The Indian Express,Assistant Professor Nazaneen Surti said she was working on a process to develop a specific technology to ensure release of the drug in the early morning. Another project for which she has filed for patent is aimed at developing a mechanism to ensure site specific delivery of a drug Albendazole and Diethylcarbamazine citrate for treatment of lymphatic filariasis. Though Surti and her team has yet not used the drugs on animals, she said that after perfecting the process in the laboratory, she would use on animals before filing for a regular patent. The other two patents filed by the college are to prepare a tropical gel of adapalene and azithromycin combination for better treatment of acneand to perfect a process for preparing dry powder inhaler containing salbutamol sulfate and fluticasone propionate for better treatment of asthmatic condition.
