The Mahisagar district police on Wednesday recovered the body of a private bank manager from the roadside on the Santrampur-Kadana highway, a day after a private SUV, in which deceased was travelling with Rs 1.18 crore in cash, was found charred near Godhar village in Santrampur taluka.
The deceased has been identified as Vishal Patil (35), the manager of a private bank at Balasinor in Mahisagar. The police said that three suspected persons have been detained after Patil’s body was found and the Santrampur police station is in the process of registering an FIR on charges of robbery and murder.
The police, which had found no trace of a human body or the money in the charred vehicle, was initially investigating the possibility that Patil had gone missing along with the cash, although a metal box in which the cash was being transported had been recovered.
Earlier, the Santrampur police had registered a note in the incident in which the SUV, belonging to Patil, went up in flames. The police had said that Patil was reportedly transporting the cash from the bank’s Balasinor branch to another branch in Dahod.
When Patil, who resided in Dahod with his family, did not reach his destination, the Dahod branch informed the police, which had also been alerted about a burning SUV by residents in Godhar.
Mahisagar police SP Jaydeepsinh Jadeja had said on Tuesday evening that the police were investigating Patil’s whereabouts. He had also said that the police probe would look into the bank’s decision to transport such huge amount of cash in a private vehicle without security.
“We are yet to ascertain how an individual employee of the bank was allowed to travel alone with such a huge quantity of cash without security… We are given to understand that he was headed to Dahod and so his presence in Santrampur, where the incident has occurred, is questionable. We are waiting for the bank officials to come forward with a complaint… There are many unanswered questions,” Jadeja had said.
Patil’s son had reportedly approached the Santrampur police with a missing persons’ complaint, which has been noted down.
