A Bachau sessions court Wednesday remanded Gujarat Criminal Investigation Department (CID) head constable Nita Chaudhary in judicial custody in connection with an attempt-to-murder case.
The remand came hours after the Gujarat Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) detained the constable, who was on the run after her bail was cancelled, from Surendranagar late on Tuesday. The ATS handed over her custody to Kuch East police after which she was produced in the court Wednesday, Sagar Bagmar, Superintendent of Kutch East police told The Indian Express. “As there was a jail warrant against her, she was sent to jail after her production before the sessions judge,” he said.
Chaudhary (34) was sent to Galpadar District Prison on the outskirts of Gandhidham town of Kutch, sources said.
The constable, who was attached to the Gandhidham office of CID (crime), and Yuvrajsinh Jadeja (30) were detained by police on June 30, after they allegedly tried to run the car in which they were travelling over six cops near Bhachau town. Jadeja was at the wheel, while Chaudhary was in the passenger’s seat beside when the incident happened. The police later found 16 bottles of liquor and two cans of beer in the vehicle.
Two cases — one for attempted murder and another under the Prohibition Act — were registered against the duo at the Bhachau police station.
On July 1, the duo was arrested for attempted murder. On July 3, the magisterial court granted bail to Chaudhary under CrPC section 437. However, the police arrested the duo under the Prohibition case registered against them on June 30, even before she was released from jail.
On July 4, the magisterial court sent the duo on police remand for two days. However, as their police remand ended, Chaudhary walked free on July 6 after her bail request in the prohibition case was granted by the magisterial court.
Meanwhile, the police moved the sessions court that set aside Chaudhary’s bail and ordered to take her into custody immediately.
Chaudhary was suspended from service after her arrest. Jadeja, an alleged bootlegger, is also wanted in four cases registered under Gujarat Prohibition Act.
