Attack on foreign students: Gambia diplomats visit ICCR office, GU

Officials from embassies and consulates of other countries also contacted the ICCR office in Ahmedabad to review the situation, ICCR Gujarat incharge Surendra Kumar confirmed to The Indian Express.

Two senior diplomats from Gambia High Commission in Delhi Tuesday visited the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR) and Gujarat University (GU) in Ahmedabad in the aftermath of the assault on foreign students for offering namaz at their hostel permise.

Officials from embassies and consulates of other countries also contacted the ICCR office in Ahmedabad to review the situation, ICCR Gujarat incharge Surendra Kumar confirmed to The Indian Express.

“The Deputy Chief of Mission and the First Secretary (of Gambia High Commission) met us and visited Gujarat University today. They returned very satisfied,” he said, adding, “Verbal communications have been established from Sri Lanka and Botswana. They have expressed satisfaction over the information shared with them”.

The Gambian delegation was accompanied by two students from the country — one enrolled in GU and another in Vadodara-based MSU Baroda, said Gujarat University authorities. According to the authorities, over 25 students from Gambia are enrolled in different undergraduate and postgraduate programmes offered by GU.

There are around 300 foreign students under ICCR scholarship at Gujarat University, while the state has around 1,100. Further, ICCR Gujarat has submitted a report to its Delhi headquarters as sought ahead of a meeting with the officials from Afghan consulate in the national capital.
