Atrocity Act: CM Bhupendra Patel chairs vigilance panel meeting

The committee is to review cases of atrocities against Dalits and tribals in the state and implementation of Atrocity Act.

gujaratThe projects are worth a total of Rs 133 crore, said a statement from the state government on Saturday.

Chief Minister Bhupendra Patel Thursday chaired a meeting of the state level vigilance and monitoring committee formed under  provisions of the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes (Prevention of Atrocities) Act, commonly known as Atrocity Act.

The committee is to review cases of atrocities against Dalits and tribals in the state and implementation of Atrocity Act.

An official release from the state government stated that the meeting was attended by finance minister Kanubhai Desai, tribal development minister Kuber Dindor, social justice and empowerment minister Bhanuben Babariya, minister of state for home Harsh Sanghavi and chief secretary Raj Kumar.

Several MPs and MLAs elected from the reserved seats such as Chaitar Vasava, Vinod Chavda, Dinesh Makwana, Tushar Chaudhary, Pradhyuman Vaja, Nimisha Suthar, Darshna Deshmukh, Mohan Dhodiya, Mohan Konkani, Jashwantsinh Bhabhor, Prabhu Vasava, Vijay Patel also participated in the meeting among others, said the release.

Notably, the meeting has been held after Vadgam MLA Jignesh Mevani earlier this year moved a petition before Gujarat High Court seeking direction to the state government to hold the meeting while adding that it had not been organised for last three years. Mevani had also stated that the meeting is to be held twice a year.
