Warning youngsters against "falling prey to some political parties" trying to "rake up" caste, community, cash and criminality in public life, former vice president M Venkaiah Naidu, at the the 73rd annual convocation of Gujarat University in Ahmedabad, highlighted the four important C's of life — character, calibre, capacity and conduct. “We still witness social discrimination. God has not allotted castes . we must remember we are human beings. Four things are important — character, calibre, capacity and conduct. Some politicians have cleverly replaced these four Cs by other four Cs — caste, community, cash and criminality. But do not fall prey to that. Respect people with character, capacity, calibre and conduct. That really makes the country strong, stable and prosperous and peaceful. This is my advice to all the youngsters. Caste, you cannot erase. What you should do is not divide. We should not discriminate people.” the former vice president also said. A total of 46,131 students from various disciplines were awarded degrees by dignitaries at the convocation of GU. Also, 260 medals were awarded to 148 students. Recalling his days as the Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, Naidu accused the Opposition of only disturbing the proceedings. Keeping in mind that we are the largest democracy in the world, legislators and parliamentarians should maintain decency and decorum, he stated. “Parliament and assemblies are for discussions, debates, decision, and not disturbances. This is a 3D formula — discuss debate and decide, not 4D — the fourth one being disturb. Disturb means destruction, then obstruction, no construction then only frustration,” he added. “Some people asked me: 'Should we keep quiet and support the government?' Somebody asked: 'Have we come for bhajans?' I said show your calibre. Let the government propose, let the opposition oppose, let the House dispose. That is the principle. Some people complain against intolerance in the country. I say don't be intolerant towards people's mandate, respect it,” he added. Naidu also advised students to take pride in their mother tongue. He said that every language should be learnt and spoken, but one should not forget their mother tongue. “Mother tongue is our eyes, other languages act as spectacles. We should be proud of our mother tongue,” he said. Meanwhile Governor Acharya Devvrat advised people to not give up humanity. “Whatever you become in life — a doctor, an engineer, or a professor — remain a human being. Never give up humanity. Humanity that understands the sufferings of others, can heal wounds. If this feeling is not in you, then literacy you have acquired is of no importance,” he said. Higher and Technical Education Minister Rushikesh Patel said that the role of students will be important in building Prime Minister Narendra Modi's resolution 'Viksit Bharat by 2047', and pointed out that the GU has produced renowned personalities.
