In a bid to check soaring vegetable prices, the Agricultural Marketing Produce Committee has decided to set up Otla Bazar, where farmers can bring their vegetables and sell it directly to the consumers.

The committee has written to AMC for its nod; identifies Vasna,Vejalpur,Ghatlodia and Nava Naroda for Otla Bazars

In a bid to check soaring vegetable prices, the Agricultural Marketing Produce Committee (APMC) has decided to set up Otla Bazar (pavement marts),where farmers can bring their vegetables and sell it directly to the consumers.

Sources said at present, farmers have to sell their produce to commission agents, who operate with licences issued under APMC Act. The agents then sell the produce to the shopkeepers at Jamalpur wholesale vegetable market, who then sell it to the consumers.

APMC chairman Babubhai Jamnadas Patel, who is also the BJP MLA from Dascroi, said the aim is to remove the middlemen so that both consumers and farmers can benefit.

“I have taken up the plan with the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation to allow farmers to sell their produce directly on lorries or cycle rickshaws inside residential areas,” he said.

Patel added that he has identified Vasna,Vejalpur,Ghatlodia and Nava Naroda as the spots to set up the pavement marts.

As for timings, the pavement marts could be allowed from 8 am to 1 pm and then again from 5 pm to 9 pm,he said.
