Thirty months after the Amroli bridge collapsed in Surat,in which a labourer died on the spot,the Katagram police arrested one of the contractors of Rajkamal builders on Friday for his negligence.
On June 8,2008,Suresh Jamura,a resident of Jharkhand,had died and 12 other were injured when the bridge on Tapi river,connecting Katargram to Amroli,collapsed.
The police on Friday arrested the contractor Mitul Shanker Patel (24),a resident of Abhishek Heights in Adajan.
Though the Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) had formed a committee to probe into the matter and the accidental death,but till date no action has been taken against Rajkamal builders.
The probe panel was headed by the civic Bridge cell chief,experts from Sardar Vallabhbhai National Institute of Technology,officials in Road and Building department of GERI,and third party inspection team of Central Engineering Institute Limited of New Mumbai.
The police officers had recently got the report from the probe panel and found that a portion of the bridge collapsed due to the negligence of the contractors.
Sources added that even after this,the civic body had awarded two important flyover projects to the same group at Gujarat Gas Circle and Delhi gate.
The police on Thursday have registered complaint against the Ahmedabad-based Rajkamal builders,their engineers and junior engineers,labour contractor and their supervisor,and deputy engineer and Junior engineer and technical supervisor of Surat Municipal Corporation.
Katargam police inspector Vinay Shukkal said,Negligence in duties have been found. We are slowly carrying out investigations in the case and we will arrest all the accused in coming days.
