The Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) on Wednesday declared that it has completed the second and final phase of demolitions of encroachments in and around the three-body Chandola lake in the south-western fringe of the city. The work on collection of debris started on Wednesday, it said.

The Chandola lake complex, the biggest water body in Ahmedabad after the Sabarmati river, is spread across 11 lakh square metres, and according to the civic body’s survey, about 4 lakh square metres of land had been encroached upon that spread over several decades.

While encroachments on 1.5 lakh square metres of land had been demolished during the Phase 1 of the drive carried out between April 29 and May 1, Phase 2 had 8,500 structures spread over 2.5 lakh square metres of land cleared on a single day. A few remaining structures were razed on Wednesday, a day after all residents of the area were evicted.

A total of 12,500 structures, most of them houses, have been demolished by the AMC during the two phases of demolitions.
The AMC, which has built a boundary wall around the cleared areas of the lake, on Wednesday said that it would ultimately set up a fence so that people could visit the lake when water is poured into it. The development of Chandola as a lakefront is in the works.

Notably, AMC officials on Wednesday also said that 33 people, who had been rendered homeless as a result of the demolition drive, were taken to a shelter home run by the civic body in Vasna and provided “good food and water, clean room, and beds”.

The AMC, a day before the second phase of the drive started, had said that just 3,600 forms were distributed to evictees of Chandola late seeking alternate EWS houses, from the Danilimda ward office. The figure, as per the civic body, remained the same on Wednesday.

The AMC demolished religious structures today. That was what they did and is stated by then in their statement. This main point has been omitted from the story completely.
