With an eye on the upcoming monsoon, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has till now identified 45 major waterlogging spots in the city, which will be levelled with reinforced cement concrete (RCC) and white topping, Mayor Kirit Parmar said on Wednesday.
Parmar was addressing the media at the end of the pre-monsoon action plan meeting with the heads of the political and administrative wings of AMC at the civic body’s Danapith headquarter.
“All road constructions and other works in the corporation limits, which involve digging, will be completed in the next 15 days or so. No new permit to start any work in related
areas will be given from June 1. Works involving reinforced cement concrete or white topping, however, can take place,” Parmar said.
“The meeting saw a presentation on the pre-monsoon plan, which had the heads from the administrative and political wings of the corporation ensuring that residents do not face problems during monsoon,” he added.
Parmar also said that about 58,000 catchments are being cleaned and a plastic layer is being added to the bottom of these catchments. In addition, gutter lines are being desilted and control rooms set up in the new zones that have been added to the corporation limits to monitor issues during the monsoon.
Maintaining that till now, 45 areas have been identified by the AMC that face heavy waterlogging, Parmar said: “To
tackle waterlogging in these areas, the road surface will be levelled with RCC and white topping. With the cleaning of catchment areas, zone-wise monitoring through control rooms and other initiatives, the issue will be resolved.” He added that more such areas would be identified soon.
In a statement, the AMC said that arrangements are being made to ensure that waterlogging does not take place in underpasses, and in case it does, then proper drainage is available. It added that water level in the Sabarmati river will be maintained with the help of the irrigation department, preventing the river from overflowing during monsoon.
To prevent the spread of water-borne diseases like dengue and malaria, intra-domestic and anti-larval flogging will be done. Treatment facilities in urban health centres and in all major hospitals will be made available without hindrance, the AMC said.
It further said that sewage treatment plants and other drainage machineries are being checked to ensure they are working properly. To prevent polluting of drinking water during monsoon, drainage lines are being cleaned and leaks repaired. Also, door-to-door waste collection will be ensured for solid waste management, the civic body said.
