Following a string of recent arrests of drug peddlers in Gujarat,Ajmer-Ahmedabad roadway has emerged as a key narcotics route used to smuggle huge quantities of charas and hashish inside Gujarat.
Last month, the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB) sleuths raided three buses and arrested four persons Mushtaq Ahmed Gulam Ahmed Sheikh from Kalupur,Rasik Chauhan from Gomtipur and Rashida Bibi and Kamla Markubhai from Naroda Patia. Together, they were allegedly carrying 26 kilograms of charas and hashish worth Rs 26 lakh in the international market.
NCB officials said all of them sourced the drugs from Ajmer. These peddlers go to Ajmer to collect the drugs sent from Kashmir. Even contrabands like cocaine are being brought via Ajmer in private buses. These are usually hidden in eatables or in handicraft material, said NCB officials.
Earlier, the ATS had seized 10 boxes of charas from Pipar Village in Kutch that was brought from Ajmer. Private buses plying from and to Ajmer have come under the scanner of the NCB and the state ATS. NCB sleuths recently questioned the owners of Jain Travels and Vardhaman Travels.
A few drivers of private buses, suspected of helping the drug-peddlers,have even been detained by the ATS.
According to the ATS,a majority of drug-traffickers have been traced to border villages of Banaskantha and Rajasthan. Sleuths are keeping a close watch on them and say their arrest will bust the drug racket.
The ATS is looking for a man named Sikander, the alleged kingpin who procures the drugs from Kashmir and knows the suppliers there.
