The small-knit community of Filipinos in Gujarat will hold their annual meet-up in Ahmedabad on June 11, on the eve of the Philippines’ Independence Day.
The Philippines celebrate their Independence Day on June 12, marking the country’s freedom from Spain in 1988. The June 11 meet-up invites all the Filipinos in Gujarat along with their spouses, children and extended Indian families to celebrate their culture.
Ahmedabad-based Filipino photographer Peach Kamath estimates that there are nearly 60-80 Filipinos who are currently settled in Gujarat. Around 30-35 of them are based in Ahmedabad itself. “We keep doing meet-ups, we are quite active… In fact, last Sunday, we did a meet-up doing community work for children at a village in Nadiad,” Kamath told The Indian Express.
“Basically we wanted to commemorate our Independence Day and wanted to introduce our children to the Filipino culture. So, there will be Filipino games, food, karaoke and ballroom night,” he said. On the night of June 10, as a prelude to the meet-up, the organisers will host a salsa and karaoke party, and for those who would like to sell Filipino products, a small stall will be arranged to display their goods.
