Ahmedabad Police team’s quick action saves couple, who consumed poison after quarrel

The police said that while on patrol, they encountered the couple’s 11-year-old son crying next to his mother, while her husband lay unconscious on her lap.

Quick action by the Ahmedabad Rural Police on Wednesday saved the lives of a couple who had purportedly consumed poison. The police found the couple and their crying 11-year-old child during a routine patrol in the Bopal area on the intervening night of Tuesday and Wednesday.

The police’s immediate intervention ensured that the husband and wife recovered.

Around 2 am on Wednesday, an Ahmedabad Police team was patrolling the streets when they noticed a woman sitting on the ground, crying inconsolably outside Devdarshan Apartment. Her 11-year-old son was crying next to her. On her lap lay her husband, unconscious and unresponsive, police said.

When the police inquired, they learned that a “domestic quarrel” had led both husband and wife to consume poison.

“One officer placed a finger in the unconscious husband’s mouth, forcing him to vomit. They repeated the process multiple times until the poison began to come out. The same life-saving step was done for the wife, who was on the verge of collapsing,” said Ahmedabad Rural SP Om Prakash Jat.

The couple were then admitted to Saraswati Hospital near Vakil Bridge. Police said the child was comforted, provided food and water, and reassured that his parents would be safe.

Doctors later confirmed that the couple was stable.
