Ahmedabad cops arrest ATM theft accused from Mumbai

Kagdapith police have arrested the main accused in connection with theft of Rs 1.98 lakh from an ATM machine of ICICI Bank at Ghantkarna Cloth Market by using the debit card of a retired schoolteacher,Karsanbhai Adiar,on July 27.

The accused,identified as 26-year-old Kishor Naiya hailing from Talaja taluka of Bhavnagar,has been remanded to five-day police custody for interrogation. He was arrested from Thane in Mumbai on Sunday.

Police Inspector A S Pandya said that on July 27 the complainant went to an ATM to check his pension amount.

At that time,there were two persons inside the ATM centre. As soon as Adiar inserted his debit card in the ATM machine,the power inside the centre and ATM machine went off. Adiar could not retrieve his card and went back.

The next day,he reported the matter to the bank. After a few days,he was informed that a total of Rs 1.98 lakh had been withdrawn from his account by using the ATM card.

Pandya said that after questioning the security men posted at the ATM centre he came to know that two persons used to visit the ATM machine to fix it. Based on the information,Pandya interrogated one Ashok Gupta who spilled the beans.

Gupta said that Naiya was the main accused. He told the police that Naiya earlier worked for ICICI bank in Surat but was dismissed a few months ago.

He said that on July 27 when Adiar was operating his ATM card,he (Gupta) switched off the lights. After Adiar left the place,he switched on the power supply again. As Naiya knew how to handle the machine,he removed Adiar’s card and withdrew money from Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar.

After Gupta’s information,Niaya was arrested from Thane in Maharashtra. Police recovered cash amount of Rs 87,500 from Naiya.

During initial interrogation,Naiya disclosed that he had two fixed deposit accounts in which he had deposited about Rs 50,000.
