A day after a video of two men assaulting a street dweller in Vadodara over suspicion of theft was widely shared on social media, one of them was arrested on Saturday, said police.
Police said that the incident occurred on Friday at Tulsidham crossroad in the Manjalpur area when the victim, whose identity is yet to be confirmed, was pulling at wires of a fountain and locals suspected him to be a thief. Inspector AJ Pandav of Manjalpur police station told The Sunday Express, “The victim appears to be mentally unstable and is unable to confirm his name or address… He was pulling at some wires of a pump of the fountain at the junction when locals thought he was stealing something. When the two men started assaulting him, some locals called up the control room and the police immediately rushed to the spot.”
Kiran Khanvilkar, 40, one of the two accused, was arrested on Saturday. He is seen assaulting the street dweller with a plastic pipe in the clip. The clip shows Khanvilkar then passing on the pipe to another man, who police have identified as Mithun Bajrang Yadav. Several passersby were among spectators of the attack, said officials.
Pandav added, “We had rescued him from the scene and sent him to SSG Hospital for treatment but his identity has not been ascertained. We have arrested one of the two men, Kiran Khanvilkar, who is a local and was passing by the area when the locals had gathered around the victim. He grabbed the plastic pipe from the vicinity and began hitting the man. We are also looking out for Yadav and will arrest him soon.”
Manjalpur police have booked Khanvilkar and Yadav under Indian Penal Code sections 323 (causing voluntary hurt) and [294 (B)] hurling abuses in public.
