8 accused seek 10-day bail to spend time with family

Citing prolonged delay in the trial and stay on the pronouncement of judgment in the case,eight accused in the 2002 Gulberg Society killings case have demanded interim bail for 10 days on humanitarian grounds to stay with their family.

Citing prolonged delay in the trial and stay on the pronouncement of judgment in the case,eight accused in the 2002 Gulberg Society killings case have demanded interim bail for 10 days on humanitarian grounds to stay with their family. After hearing the accused and the prosecution,the special court has reserved its order.

Sixty persons have been undergoing trial in the case in connection with the massacre. While most of the accused in the case are out on bail,nine are still lodged at the Sabarmati Central Jail.

In their bail application through their advocate Robin Mogera,the eight accused have stated that the trial in the case has been getting delayed on one or the other applications moved by the parties concerned.

They also cited various representations they have made to the trial court for an expeditious trial. The accused also highlighted the fact that even the Supreme Court has stayed the pronouncement of judgment in the case till further orders.

Special Public Prosecutor R C Kodekar opposed the application on the ground that the accused could not be released on bail merely because the trial is being prolonged. Even the HC has rejected their bail pleas earlier,he argued. The court has reserved its order till May 31.
