Junagadh district collectorate on Thursday carried out a demolition drive to raze illegal structures near Upar Kot area. In all, 59 unauthorised structures, which were allegedly encroaching upon an area measuring 14,000 square metre, were demolished.
Junagadh Collector Anil Ranavasiya said that the 59 unauthorised structures were erected by as many families. He said that the demolition drive was carried out as per rules as the encroachers were issued notices, but none of them could produce necessary documents.
The demolition was carried out with the help of 10 JCB machines as around 400 policemen were deployed to maintain law and order. Teams of Paschim Gujarat Vij Company Limited and fire brigade were also present during the drive.
The collector said some of the encroachers whose structures were razed are also accused in cases under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act and liquor bootlegging.
Ranavasiya said that the total cost of the encroached land is estimated to be Rs 50 crore.
