Inspector Viraj Jadeja from Chandkheda police station said, “There was a crowd of over 1.15 lakh spectators and over 4,500 police officers inside the stadium. We had received 22 complaints over stolen cellphones, which is far less than the average of 150-200 such complaints we get during the Indian Premier League.”
Among the 22 stolen phones, there were five iPhones and eight Samsung phones, said
police. “Probably these phones fell out of the pockets of the spectators at the stadium… some people found them and submitted them to the police station,” Jadeja said, adding that the four devices were returned to their owners.
Bollywood actor Urvashi Rautela had taken to X (formerly Twitter) to say she had lost her “24 carat real gold iphone at Narendra Modi Stadium, Ahmedabad”, seeking help in finding it. However, she did not file a formal complaint with the police.
According to Jadeja, there are three hotspots where the phones are stolen – the gates, the food stalls and the Metro station. “We will take help of the cyber cell… We have kept the stolen phones on surveillance to track them,” Jadeja said on finding the remaining cellphones.
The Chandkheda police station had also detained 33 people for indulging in suspicious activities near the stadium on the match days.
They included individuals who were found roaming around the stadium without tickets and showing suspicious behaviour.
