Four more persons were arrested by the Bhavnagar Special Operations Group (SOG) on Tuesday amid a probe over the dummy candidates racket that was busted on April 16, officials said.

“Now a total of 23 persons have been arrested in the case, further investigation is on. All four accused have been involved in representing themselves as dummy candidates in various exams. We are registering more names apart from the ones booked in the FIR,” said inspector SB Bharwad, investigating officer, SOG.

The four accused have been identified as Sanjay Solanki (25), Mahavirsinh Sarvaiya (39), Chandradeep Chauhan (21), and Kirtikumar Panot (29). All of them are residents of Bhavnagar.

On April 14, four persons were arrested after the local crime branch of the Bhavnagar Police busted the alleged scam. The network of the accused allegedly provided dummy candidates for attending government recruitment examinations and board examinations on behalf of candidates of the Bhavnagar district.

According to an FIR filed at the Bharatnagar Police Station in Bhavnagar, Sharad Panot, Prakash alias PK Dave and Baldev Rathod, forged hall tickets of candidates for government jobs exams and Class 10 and 12 board exams. All of them are residents of Bhavnagar.

They were accused of sending dummy candidates to take examination for dozens of job aspirants and students since 2012.

On Monday, five people were arrested – Hirenkumar Jani (21), Jaydeep Bheda (25), Devang Ramanuj (19), Yuvrajsinh Parmar (23), and Hasmukh Bhatt (27), who worked as a Talati Mantri in a village of Bhavnagar.

Initially, 36 candidates were booked in the FIR. A total of 44 accused have been named now, police said.

The FIR stated the trio – Panot, Dave, and Rathod – used to charge any amount between Rs 5 lakh and Rs10 lakh for finding a dummy candidate and facilitating the entry into the examination hall for taking the examination on behalf of a job aspirant or student.

They used to pay Rs 25,000 to dummy candidates for each examination, said police.

The FIR stated that as per claims made by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) leader Yuvrajsinh Jadeja, one Milan Baraiya had appeared in the junior clerk recruitment examination last Sunday on behalf of Bhavesh Jethva and one Vimal Jani had acted as a dummy of Ankit Lakum in the same examination.
