A group of 25 pilgrims from Puducherry had a close shave after the bus on which they were on board was swayed by floodwaters of Maleshri river while trying to cross a causeway in Bhavnagar Thursday, said officials.
The incident took place at around 7 pm near Nishkalank Mahadev Temple on the sea coast of Bhavnagar taluka amid very heavy rain, officers of Bhavnagar district disaster management control room said. The rescue operation was carried out by police, fire-brigade and locals.
“The bus was trying to cross a flooded causeway when it was swayed by strong current of floodwaters. There were 25 pilgrims from the Union Territory of Puducherry aboard the bus,” said an officer.
“However, all the pilgrims were rescued successfully and no one is reported missing in the incident,” the control room officer added. A post from the Bhavnagar Collector’s official X handle said, “A bus with pilgrims got trapped at Koliyak in Bhavnagar when the Maleshri river got flooded. The trapped pilgrims were shifted to a larger vehicle and will be brought out once the river waters recede. The rescue work is on”.
Very heavy rainfall was reported from many parts of Bhavnagar during the day on Thursday. Bhavnagar taluka logged 86 mm rain during 12 hours ending at 6 pm Thursday.
