Two workers were killed and three others injured after hot metal splashed on them from the furnace of a steel mill of Rudra Global Infra Products Limited (RGIPL) at Sihor in Bhavnagar early Thursday.
The incident took place at the steel mill having a furnace for making billets and a re-rolling mill for manufacturing thermomechanically-treated (TMT) bars.
“The workers suffered burns after hot metal splashed on them from the furnace. Two of them succumbed and three others are undergoing treatment in a hospital,” Mitesh Menat, Assistant Director (Industrial Safety and Health), Bhavnagar, said.
The police said the incident took place around 1.30 am. The deceased were identified as Ratiram Ramdulare Prajapati (41), a native of Amliha in Chitrakoot district of Uttar Pradesh (UP) and Prasutan Munnalal Chouhan (19), a native of Purna in Bahraich district of UP.
“While Prajapati was killed on the spot, Chouhan succumbed around 9 am at Sir Takhtasinhji General Hospital in Bhavnagar,” an officer of Sihor police said.
The injured were identified as Tulsiram, Raju Lalubhai and Ramkishor Pandit, all natives of UP. “At the mill, hot molten iron splashed on Prajapati and Chouhan and their clothes caught fire. The three fellow workers tried to help them but suffered burns in the process,” the officer added.
The company could not be reached for a comment even as the police were in the process of registering a case of accidental deaths.
