. (file) In the last two years, at least 152 labourers died in industrial accidents in the three most industrialised districts of Surat, Bharuch, and Ahmedabad in Gujarat, the Assembly was informed Friday.
Of those who perished in industrial accidents in the year ending January 31, 2023, 77 were from Surat district and 65 others were from Bharuch district, said the government in a written reply to a question asked by Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MLA Chaitar Vasava. The state government also stated that it has not provided any financial assistance to the family members of the deceased. “As per law, the industrial units provide assistance,” the government stated without mentioning the quantum of assistance.
In reply to another question asked by Congress MLA Shailesh Parmar, the government stated in a written reply that 10 people died and six others were injured in 27 cases of fire and blasts that occurred in the Ahmedabad district during 2021 and 2022. In the Surat district, there were 65 cases of fire or blasts in industrial units wherein 19 people died and 33 others were injured.
During the Question Hour, the state government in various written replies stated that it received 113 complaints in the last year from the districts of Kutch (76 complaints), Surendranagar (13 complaints), Jamnagar (17), Navsari (6) and Mahisagar (3) in relation to the violation of labour laws. The government also stated various steps have been taken to resolve the complaints including the cases filed for violation of the minimum wages act and contract labour act.
Costly flight
There has been an 18 per cent increase in the number of times government-owned aircraft and helicopter were used in the last year, the state legislature was informed Friday.
The Gujarat government stated that it owns one helicopter and two aircraft which were used 223 times between February 1, 2021, and January 31, 2022. The usage rose to 263 times between February 1, 2022, and January 31, 2023, the government stated in a written reply to a question asked by Congress MLA Imran Khedawala.
The government further said it has spent Rs 36 crore for the maintenance of these aircraft, and payment of salaries of pilots and other staff.
