A 14-Year-old girl, who was suspected to have contracted the H1N1 virus, died at a city private hospital on Thursday. The deceased was identified as Hiral Chauhan,a resident of the Karelibaug area.

Hiral was first admitted to the Kashiben Gordhandas Patel Children’s Hospital on August 14 where she was tested positive for malaria. However, when she was retested on August 17,her reports were negative for malaria, but she was still suffering from fever.

On August 18,she was shifted to Aashirwad Hospital with acute respiratory distress,as ventilators were not available at the children’s hospital.

“Initially,we suspected it to be a case of dengue, but her reports were negative for this. As the acute respiratory distress and fever showed no signs of decline,we found the symptoms similar to swine flu and immediately alerted the Sir Sayajirao General Hospital and also the Vadodara Municipal Corporation,” said Dr Nitin Agarwal,

paediatric intensivist at Aashirward Hospital.

He added,“We considered the possibility of shifting her to the SSG Hospital. But as she was not in a position to be shifted,we arranged for a proper quarantine for her here at the hospital.”

Her blood samples were sent to Ahmedabad for H1N1 tests on Wednesday night and she died this morning. SSG Hospital superintendent Dr Atul Saxena said they have asked the testing centre to send her report early on a priority basis.

“We expect the reports by tonight or Friday morning,” he added.
