135 diamond firms to set up shops in SDB today
The bourse, set up at a cost of Rs 3,200 crore with an aim to shift and expand diamond trading business from Mumbai to Surat, has been built on an area of 66 lakh square feet.

More than 135 diamond firms, including 26 from Mumbai, are all set to open their offices at Surat Diamond Bourse (SDB) from Tuesday. This will be in addition to 983 diamond merchants who have set shops at SDB on Dussehra.
On Monday, State Bank of India opened an office at the bourse.
Traders are hopeful that the business will start picking up once SDB, a pet project of Prime Minister Narendra Modi that he will inaugurate on December 17, will become fully operational.
“In the current recession period, once the offices are opened the business will start coming. This will also give momentum to the diamond business,” said SDB media convenor Dinesh Navadia.
The bourse, set up at a cost of Rs 3,200 crore with an aim to shift and expand diamond trading business from Mumbai to Surat, has been built on an area of 66 lakh square feet at DREAM (Diamond Research and Mercantile) city. Delhi-based Morphogenesis, which designed the bourse, claims that it is bigger than the largest office space in the world — the Pentagon of the United States.
SDB has 4,200 offices ranging from 300 square feet area to 75,000 square feet.
