(Express Photo) Detailing the measures it has taken to tackle cattle menace in the city, the Ahmedabad traffic police told the Gujarat High Court on Thursday that after public officials were obstructed from catching and impounding stray cattle a few times, instructions were issued to register FIRs against such “headstrong persons for obstructing public servants’ duty”. So far, 12 FIRs have been lodged in this connection.
Ahmedabad City Deputy Commissioner of Police (Traffic Administration) Baldevsinh Vaghela, in an affidavit, added that while eight hotspot areas have been identified where stray cattle are found in abundance, nine areas have been identified as “cattle accident prone zones” – three of them on the SG Highway.
The affidavit also listed eight areas that have been declared as “cattle free” or “no cattle zone”, such as Cantonment Area, Airport Circle, Gandhi bridge to Delhi Darwaja and Prem Darwaja to Kalupur railway station, among others.
On tackling parking issues in the city, the affidavit stated that cases are regularly being registered for unauthorised parking of cars, and over Rs 1 crore have been recovered as penalty between January 1, 2022 to April 29, this year.
The affidavit added that for towing of unauthorised parking, the traffic department is “well equipped with 16 towing vans”. The department has towed over 24,000 vehicles from January 1, 2022 to April 29, this year, and recovered over Rs 1.47 crore as towing charge.
The affidavit has been filed in relation to a contempt petition the HC is seized of alleging wilful disobedience in implementing its earlier orders in relation to maintaining road and smooth traffic conditions, tackling cattle menace and parking issues.
