Launched in 2017, PMMVY provides for maternity benefits of Rs 5,000 in three installments, but only for the first child.

Announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on December 31, 2016, the scheme is on the same lines as the Indira Gandhi Matritva Sahyog Yojana that started as pilot project in 2011 in 53 districts.

"The first pregnancy of a woman exposes her to new kind of challenges and stress factors. Hence, the scheme provides support to the mother for safe delivery and immunisation of her first living child," Minister of State for Women and Child Development Krishna Raj said in response to a question in the Rajya Sabha.

One could argue that this step would reflect better in population control. Would it though? Or would just make it far worse for pregnant women who desperately need financial assistance?
