
The Supreme Court banned registration of diesel-run SUVs and cars having engines beyond 2000 cc in Delhi and NCR from March 1, next year. With this order, the court agreed partially with the National Green Trobunal (NGT) which had banned registration of diesel vehicles in Delhi till January 6, while also suggesting that the Central and Delhi governments must stop buying diesel cars in the city.

Commercial vehicles, which are not Delhi bound, will not be allowed to enter national capital through entry points NH-8 and NH-1. Mainly trucks which pass through Delhi have been found to be the major source of vehicular emissions in the city.

The Supreme Court raised by 100 per cent the Green cess being levied on commercial vehicles entering Delhi. Taking note of the plight of traffic policemen, who are the worst affected by rising smog levels in the city, the top court asked the Centre to give proper marks to the policemen.
