Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed confidence that his country’s ongoing war against Russia “will end sooner” with the re-election of Donald Trump as the President of the United States. He further said that his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, had showed no interest in reaching a peace agreement.
Zelenskyy revealed that he had a “constructive exchange” with Trump during a phone call following the Republican candidate’s victory in the US presidential election. “I didn’t hear anything that goes against our position,” he added.
“From our side, we must do everything so that this war ends next year, ends through diplomatic means,” The Guardian quoted Zelenskyy as saying.
Stating that Russia was making advances in eastern Ukraine, Zelenskyy admitted that the battlefield situation in the region was difficult, The Guardian reported citing a radio interview aired on Saturday.
The Ukrainian President said that while US legislation prevented him from meeting the president-elect before his inauguration in January, he would want to engage directly with Trump, rather than intermediaries or advisers.
“I, as the president of Ukraine, will only take seriously a conversation with the president of the United States of America, with all due respect to any entourage, to any people,” The Guardian quoted Zelenskyy as saying.
Speaking from his Mar-a-Lago resort in Florida on Friday, Trump had remarked, “We’re going to work very hard on Russia and Ukraine. It’s got to stop.”
