China’s first helicopter to fight fire to be ready next year

Seven pilots and three mechanics are receiving training in Russia for this purpose,said Zhao.

China’s first helicopter to fight fire will be deployed by the middle of next year at its biggest city,Shanghai.

The Russian-made Ka-32 helicopter,currently undergoing final stages of assembly,will be delivered to the metropolis by January next year,said Shanghai Fire Department chief Zhao Zixin.

Shanghai will set up an air fire-crew to conduct emergency rescue and firefighting missions involving skyscrapers,high-speed railways and viaducts. Seven pilots and three mechanics are receiving training in Russia for this purpose,Zhao said.

Another 20 air-crew are currently going through simulator training and study in Shanghai,state-run Xinhua news agency reported. Shanghai has over 14,000 high-rise buildings,including 400 building over 100 meters.

A fatal blaze in November,2010 gutted a 28-story apartment building in Shanghai’s Jing’an District killing 58 people.
