A surge of violence marred the Fourth of July holiday in the United States, with several mass shootings and a deadly vehicular incident reported. In Philadelphia, a drive-by shooting left a 19-year-old man dead and seven others injured. Meanwhile, Chicago saw two mass shootings on Friday that wounded 14 people. No arrests have been made in connection with these incidents, police said.

Philadelphia’s shooting occurred around 11:30 pm on Thursday when officers on patrol discovered a victim lying on the street with gunshot wounds. Additional officers found more victims soon after. A man in a passing car had fired multiple shots at a group of people gathered in the area. The injured included three men, three juvenile males, and a juvenile female, aged 14 to 23. They were treated at local hospitals for injuries that were not life-threatening, with all reported in stable condition. The motive behind the shooting remains unknown.

Chicago witnesses three shooting incidents

In Chicago, a day after a Fourth of July shooting killed two women and an 8-year-old boy, police investigated two additional mass shootings. The first occurred in the Little Italy neighborhood shortly after midnight, where eight people were shot during an exchange of gunfire between two individuals. The victims, five women and three men aged 18 to 74, were reported in good or fair condition. Approximately 90 minutes later, another shooting in the Austin neighborhood wounded six people – three men, two women aged 18 to 25, and a 15-year-old boy. Both shootings involved an exchange of gunfire between individuals who fled the scenes.

Earlier on Thursday, a shooting at a home on Chicago’s south side killed two women, ages 45 and 24, and wounded three boys, ages 8, 7, and 5. The 8-year-old boy succumbed to his injuries later that day. Police Deputy Chief Don Jerome reported that multiple shooters, using both a rifle and a handgun, had fired at the home. No arrests have been made, and investigations continue.

Pickup truck drives into a crowd in New York City

In New York City, a tragic incident occurred when a pickup truck drove into a crowd celebrating the holiday, resulting in three deaths and eight injuries. The Ford F-150, traveling at high speed, ran through an intersection and onto the sidewalk, plowing into Corlears Hook Park on Manhattan’s Lower East Side. Two victims were pronounced dead at the scene, and a third died later. The names of the victims have not been released. Four of the injured were in critical condition, three were seriously injured, and two sustained minor injuries.

New York Police Department Chief Jeffrey Maddrey and Mayor Eric Adams stated that the crash was not believed to be an act of terrorism. Authorities suspect that alcohol played a role in the crash, and charges against the driver are pending. This incident followed another recent crash on Long Island, where four people, including an NYPD officer, were killed when a driver, later charged with driving while intoxicated, crashed into a nail salon.

The Fourth of July has historically been one of the deadliest days in the US, with an increase in shootings and other violent incidents during the summer months.
