Former First Lady Michelle Obama will not be attending the swearing-in ceremony of President-elect Donald Trump on Monday, marking the second recent occasion where she has been absent from a major event involving past US leaders and their spouses.
In a statement shared with the Associated Press, the Office of Barack and Michelle Obama confirmed, “Former President Barack Obama is confirmed to attend the 60th Inaugural Ceremonies. Former First Lady Michelle Obama will not attend the upcoming inauguration.” No reason was provided for her absence.
While former Presidents Barack Obama, Bill Clinton, and George W Bush are slated to attend Trump’s inauguration, accompanied by their spouses Laura Bush and Hillary Clinton, Michelle Obama’s decision to skip the event has drawn attention.
This comes shortly after she also declined to attend last week’s state funeral for former President Jimmy Carter. At that event, all three former presidents, along with their spouses, were present, with Michelle Obama being the sole spouse absent.
The state funeral in Washington, held at the National Cathedral, brought together former Presidents Trump, Obama, Bush, and Clinton. Despite past political tensions, Barack Obama and Donald Trump were seen chatting amicably during the service.
Michelle Obama’s absence from these high-profile events contrasts with her attendance at Trump’s first inauguration in 2017, where all former presidents and first ladies were present, including Hillary Clinton, who had lost to Trump in the 2016 presidential election.
Representatives for Bill Clinton and George W. Bush confirmed that both former presidents and their wives will join the January 20 ceremony at the Capitol.
