US Presidential Elections 2024, Kamla Harris: In an address at the Democratic National Convention, Vice-President Kamala Harris formally accepted her party’s nomination for the presidency, pledging to lead the United States into a future marked by unity, justice, and progress.

During her speech, Harris declared, “I accept your nomination for president of the United States of America.” Her nomination follows President Joe Biden’s decision to withdraw from the race at 81. Harris’s potential presidency would mark the first time a female president has held office in the United States.

Harris hit out at her opponent Republican candidate Donald Trump, calling him an “unserious man”. She also underlined her commitment towards ending the war in Gaza, and vowed to stand with Ukraine.

Here’s all that she said:

On Donald Trump

“In many ways, Donald Trump is an unserious man. But the consequences of putting Donald Trump back in the White House are extremely serious,” Harris stated.

She warned of the serious consequences of re-electing Trump, pointing to the chaos of his previous administration and the threat he poses to democracy. Harris highlighted Trump’s past actions, including his attempt to overturn the 2020 election results. “Consider not only the chaos and calamity when he was in office but also the gravity of what has happened since he lost … Trump tried to throw away your votes. When he failed, he sent an armed mob to the United States Capitol, where they assaulted law enforcement … For an entirely different set of crimes, he was found guilty of fraud by a jury of everyday Americans and separately, found liable for committing sexual abuse …,” Harris said.

On reproductive rights

The Vice President addressed key issues central to her campaign, particularly reproductive rights. Harris criticized Trump’s efforts to restrict access to abortion and reproductive healthcare, pledging to restore these freedoms if elected. She condemned Trump’s influence on the Supreme Court, which she argued has led to severe consequences for women across the country.

“We trust women, and when Congress passes a bill to restore reproductive freedom. As president of the United States, I will proudly sign it into law,” she assured.

For the middle class

Harris emphasised the significance of the upcoming election as a “precious, fleeting opportunity” to move beyond division. “We are not going back, and we are charting a new way forward, forward to a future with a strong and growing middle class, because we know a strong middle class has always been critical to America’s success, and building that middle class will be a defining goal of my presidency,” she said.

Harris vowed to uphold the nation’s core principles, including the rule of law, free and fair elections, and the peaceful transfer of power.

On Gaza and Ukraine

Harris walked a tightrope while speaking of the Israel-Hamas war. While declaring that she stands by Israel’s right to self-defence, she said it was “heartbreaking” to see the suffering in Gaza. “President Biden and I are working to end this war such that Israel is secure, the hostages are released, the suffering in Gaza ends, and the Palestinian people realize their right to dignity, security, freedom, and self-determination, ” she said.

She also stated that she will stand with NATO allies and with Ukraine if she became president. This comes amid concerns over Trump’s criticism of the military alliance.

Harris makes a pitch

Harris expressed gratitude to her husband, Doug Emhoff, and President Joe Biden, highlighting the deep bond they share and their shared journeys. She then recounted her upbringing, paying tribute to her parents and the values they instilled in her. Harris vividly described her childhood, filled with music, laughter, and the encouragement to be fearless, which shaped her resilience and commitment to justice.

Reflecting on her career choice, Harris shared a poignant story from her high school years. She recounted how a friend confided in her about being sexually abused, a revelation that deeply impacted Harris and led her to pursue a career as a prosecutor. “I believe everyone has a right to safety, to dignity, and to justice,” she declared, reinforcing her commitment to protecting the vulnerable.

Concluding her speech, Harris called on Americans to reject the negativity of her opponents and to embrace the ideals that define the nation. She urged the country to rise to the occasion, honouring the sacrifices of past generations by fighting for a future built on freedom, opportunity, and fairness. “We are the heirs to the greatest democracy in the history of the world,” she proclaimed, rallying the crowd to stand united in the face of the challenges ahead.
