An Indian farm labourer, who was abandoned alongside a road in Italy’s Latina after being severely injured while working in a farm, died in a hospital on Wednesday.
The Indian labourer Satnam Singh’s arm was severed while he was working in a farm and the injured man was dumped along the road near his house without being attended to. The Labour Minister of Italy Marina Calderone condemned the incident and said that it is an “act of barbarity”.
The Indian Embassy in Italy confirmed the tragic development and tweeted on its official X handle about the incident.
The embassy said, “The Embassy is aware of the very unfortunate demise of an Indian national in Latina, Italy. We are in contact with local authorities. Efforts are underway to contact the family and provide consular assistance.”
According to the news agency AFP, Minister Calderone while addressing the Italian parliament said that “The Indian agricultural worker who suffered a serious accident in the countryside of Latina and was abandoned in very serious conditions…has died.”
Although as per the Italy’s trade union Flai CGIL, Satnam who was around 31 years old, was working in Italy without legal papers, quoted the news agency AFP.
As per reports, Satnam got injured on Monday while he was cutting hay and accidently severed his arm in the slicing machine. It was Satnam’s wife and friends who reportedly informed the police about the incident and an air ambulance was dispatched to Satnam’s residence.
In a Facebook post, the opposition party of Italy, Democratic Party said that the conditions in which Satnam Singh was “forced to work” weren’t suitable.
The party added by saying, “As the Democratic Party we are close to Satnam Singh’s wife and all his loved ones, aware that the profound pain of separation associates the dramatic awareness of the double violence suffered.”
