Apple’s next big launch event is just around the corner, where Cupertino is most likely to introduce the next-generation iPhone 16 series along with new smartwatches, which will be the 10th generation smartwatch from Apple and are most likely to be called the Apple Watch Series 10.
The very first smartwatch from Apple, known as the Apple Watch Series 1, was introduced back in 2015. Since then, the company has tweaked its design, hardware, and capabilities. With the upcoming models, the company is said to have overhauled its design.
Here are 10 things that we currently know about the upcoming Apple Watch Series 10:
Apple has always offered its watches in two sizes, and the trend will continue with the upcoming Series 10. However, this time around, the smaller variant of the Apple Watch Series 10 will be as big as the bigger Apple Watch Series 9 model and will feature a 45 mm square display, while the bigger Apple Watch Series 10 will include a large 49 mm display, similar to the Apple Watch Ultra 2, suggests a report by 9to5Mac.
Apple has always used OLED screens since the first generation Watch, and the upcoming Watch Series 10 will introduce a more efficient OLED screen, featuring low-temperature polycrystalline oxide (LTPO) thin-film transistor (TFT) technology, which will improve display colour reproduction and brightness without any additional tax on the battery. This panel is also said to be thinner in size, further reducing the size of the watch to make it thinner and lighter.
Apple Watch Series 10 is also said to be significantly thinner than its predecessor. While Apple Watches were never known as bulky, the upcoming Series 10 is likely to be the thinnest Apple Watch, featuring a redesigned casing, which will also help users to distinguish between two generations of Apple Watch.
The Apple Watch Series 10 is said to be powered by a new S10 chip, tailor-made for these watches for enhanced performance and power efficiency. This, combined with an efficient screen, is said to further improve the battery life of the watch. It is also said that the Apple Watch Series 10 might also include a smaller battery than its predecessor, and the efficiency gains from the new screen and processor will help Apple to deliver the same battery life as the Apple Watch Series 9 despite the smaller battery.
Apple Watch Series 10 is also said to include new health sensors that could detect hypertension and sleep apnea. However, the availability of these features, despite packing the hardware, will be subject to clearance by regulatory bodies like the FDA.
The Apple Watch Series 10 will ship with watchOS 11, which was first showcased at WWDC 2024. Besides the new features showcased at the developers’ conference, Apple is also expected to introduce Watch Series 10-exclusive features on watchOS 11.
Apple Watch Series 10, along with the iPhone 16 series, is most likely to be launched in the first half of September. Once introduced, the same should go on sale within a week, and these are expected to be priced similarly to their predecessors.
Considering the leaks and speculation, the Apple Watch Series 10 might deliver a meaningful upgrade, even for those who already have an Apple Watch Series 9. With a bigger display and new features, the Apple Watch Series 10 could end up becoming a fan-favourite smartwatch.
